As John Kerry the Secretary of State testified on Thursday in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, there were protesters gathering at Lafayette Square, just to the north of White House, getting ready to voice their opinions on the Iran Deal engineered by President Obama.
The event was slated to feature Rand Paul and Ted Cruz two Republican presidential hopefuls and two current U.S. Senators. It was hosted by the action committee Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee. Prior to either senator’s scheduled arrival, the situation already had become mayhem.
CWALAC members were joined by protesters from CodePink, an organization led by women that supports the deal made in Iran. Protesters pushed one another for space, jockeying for their post positions in order to hold up their signs behind the two guests as they gave their speeches.
One of the protesters from the CWALAC tore up a sign of one of the protesters from CodePink.
CWALAC president and CEO Penny Nance spoke first although her voice could not compete well with singing coming from both sets of protesters. Vicky Hartzler a U.S. Representative and a Republican from Missouri followed Nance.
By the time Cruz stepped up to the microphone, the protestors and media came in as close as they could, Paul never even appeared at the event.
Cruz said there was not anything more pressing than all Americans across the nation coming together and stopping the Iran nuclear agreement.
A few minutes later, a protester from CodePink shouted using a megaphone that they wanted a peace president as well as a peace candidate, with diplomacy and not war. The CWALAC members started to chant, “We want Ted!”
Cruz then called on one of the protesters to debate with him. CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin did just that. She asked Cruz why he thought he knew better than the powers of the world that the deal was not the right one.
Cruz responded mentioning the deal would send more than $100 billion to Iran and the money would be used in turn to kill Americans.
He said Iran did not reciprocate the views of CodePink of Peace with Iran. He continued by saying that the deal was nothing more than a capitulation by the president to radical, theocratic Islamic zealots who want to kill Americans.
The White House said following Cruz’s speech that it was nothing more than a Pro-War Rally on Cruz’s part.
