Senator Ted Cruz, from Texas is a sometime-incendiary Republican presidential nominee. On Friday, on the Senate floor he called his own party’s leader a liar in what was an extraordinary airing in public of a grievance.
Cruz, is a big opponent of the Export-Import Bank of the federal government, and reacted in personal terms after Mitch McConnell the Senator from Kentucky and the majority leader of the Senator allowed a vote after being pressed by a bipartisan group of different senators to revive the export credit agency of the government.
Cruz said he could not believe McConnell would lie, as the Texas senator said McConnell had told him there had been no deal made to bring up a vote on the Export Import Bank.
Cruz said that allowing the vote, which is nearly certain to pass, was a lie that McConnell to not only every senator who is Republican buy the press and everyone else.
Cruz has been controversial ever since he arrived in 2013 in the U.S. Senate. He helped shut the government down that same year in an effort to get the Affordable Care Act defunded and pressed to shut the Homeland Security Department down this year over the executive orders by the President on Immigration.
Cruz has challenged Democrats multiple times but has largely held back when it came to attacking his fellow Republicans.
On Friday, Cruz did not hold anything back. He spoke in detail about what he called a confrontation behind closed doors he had with McConnell last May, after Export-Import Bank supporters attempted to derail a bill on trade unless they promised to vote to keep the federal bank open.
Cruz said he asked McConnell in front of other Republican senators and the majority leader denied it three times, saying no deal had been reached.
On June 30, the Export-Import Bank authorization ran out. The bank offers loan guarantees and other banking assistance to international customers of exporters from the U.S.
McConnell has allowed the vote to reopen the federal bank as early as this Sunday, but said that he personally was opposed to it.
