Cecile Richards the President of Planned Parenthood said on Monday that the planned vote by the Senate to defund her organization was all about denying women the access to healthcare in the United States.
During an interview with an online news network, Richards said that the vote scheduled for Monday evening was nothing but politics.
The vote on Monday is about denying women the access to cancer screenings, birth control, testing as well as treatment for many women where their only doctor is Planned Parenthood, added Richards.
The Senate vote on the standalone legislation would cut off the funding to Planned Parenthood and redirect that same funding to other health organizations for women.
However, it is not expected that the Senate Republicans will have the necessary 60 votes to advance the bill. This vote has come as Planned Parenthood is facing strong backlash to a number of videos that were leaked by a group that is anti-abortion that shows officials talking about transferring fetal organs and tissue for medical research.
Presidential candidates and lawmakers from the GOP have questioned whether the group profited from the donations, and leaders of the GOP have tasked committees in Congress with launching their own investigations.
Richards on Monday said that no laws had been broken. She added that it is illegal to make a profit and Planned Parenthood did not. The women’s organization does not make any profit on any donations of fetal tissue. There are businesses that do this type of work that are not related to or do not have a relationship with Planned Parenthood.
The group is 100% non-profit added Richards, and we make zero from donations of fetal tissue.
Richards indicated that Planned Parenthood only receives a reimbursement for costs of transferring and preserving the tissue.
Center for Medical Progress is the group that is responsible for sending out the videos. They shot and edited footage that the Planned Parenthood president said made the videos deceptive and distorted.
Richards summed it up by saying a political campaign is taking place. The organization has been around 99 years and will be for another 99.
