An attorney working for Donald Trump a Republican presidential candidate has apologized for what he called an inarticulate remark made to a news network in which, while defending Trump, he said, “You cannot rape your spouse.”
Michael Cohen a Trump Organization special counsel in a prepared statement released on Tuesday, said the allegations of racism or rape hit at my core and that in a moment of anger and shock, he made an inarticulate remark, which he says he does not believe and which he apologies for saying.
On Monday, the online site recounted a deposition that had been described in detail in a book published in 1993. In the book, Ivana Trump describes an encounter between her and her then husband (Donald Trump) as rape.
Cohen told the news site, of course he understands that by definition you cannot rape your spouse.
He went on to later issue a number of threats to the network’s reporter saying amongst other things, he should “tread very lightly,” and that he would screw up his life with some litigation.
Prior to the apology made by Cohen, the campaign of Trump sought to distance itself from Cohen’s remarks. Corey Lewandowski the campaign manager for Trump said he did not know of Cohen’s comments but hearing them, Trump disagrees with them.
The network also obtained a prepared statement from Trump’s ex-wife Ivana, who said the report about the actions by Trump, is completely with merit.
She said that Donald and she are best of friends and the two have raised their three children that they are very proud of and love. She said she had only fondness for Donald and wishes him luck in his presidential campaign, the statement read.
Trump’s campaign did not make any comment when contacted regarding the attorney’s statement and subsequent apology.
Trump is currently one of the leaders of the GOP presidential race but has been dogged by comments made that have angered immigrants from Mexico. He claimed that the only immigrants crossing over illegally into the U.S. were criminals or rapists.
