Congress Says Goodbye to $2 Million

May 20, 2010

By: Steve Kirsch

My name is Steve Kirsch. I'm a longstanding donor to political candidates and causes, and I've taken the fixcongressfirst.org Funders Pledge because I don't want the power that I have to affect the outcome of elections -- that power should belong only to the people.

After just one week, people all across the country have promised to withhold nearly $2 million from Congress members who refuse to support the Fair Elections Now Act.

We're hitting them where it hurts most: in their campaign coffers. And if you have any doubts that this effort is working, listen to the words of a campaign staffer for David Segal, a congressional candidate in Rhode Island:

We keep hearing from prospective donors that they insist we sign the pledge. We're thrilled to tell them not only have we signed the pledge, but David has a long history of working closely with Fix Congress First to demand real campaign finance reform and we've made it an important part of our campaign.

To keep building on our momentum, we need as many people as possible to join in. Please take the Funders Pledge and ask everyone you know to join you:

Yesterday's congressional primaries were a clear sign of Americans' frustration with Washington, DC politics-as-usual. The anti-incumbent feeling is palpable across the country, and as the midterm elections creep closer, our Funders Pledge will have Congress members feeling the pinch of their dwindling campaign funds even more.

They'll come around -- and if they don't, it might cost them their job.

The pressure to pass the Fair Elections Now Act keeps growing. In the wake of the Citizens United decision, more and more people have recognized the need to reform our electoral system. But the desire for change won't mean a thing if we don't step up and do something about it.

I hope you'll do your part and take the pledge now:
